Will there be a renewed focus on Venezuelan culture (art, music, etc.) now that Hugo Chavez is out of the news and out of the picture? Let’s hope so because the country has much to offer. Case in point, disco/funk/Latin rhythm group Los Amigos Invisibles, who will release “Repeat After Me” this week.
“Repeat After Me” is the seventh studio album from the Latin Grammy and Grammy Award-winning, New York City-based sextet. Originally from Venezuela, Los Amigos Invisibles are, arguably, one of the first Latin Alternative groups from Latin America. Members Julio “Chulius” Briceno, Jose Luis “Cheo” Pardo a.k.a. DJ Afro, Armando “Odnam” Figueredo, Mauricio “Maurimix” Arcas, Jose Rafael “Catire” Torres and Juan Manuel “Mamel” Roura formed the group in 1991 in response to the lack of variety in Caracas’ rock scene. The result has been more than 20 years of Latin-style disco/funk music that’s spread across the globe thanks to catchy tunes and explosive live shows that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The band’s latest release is heavy on the dance, bass and pop sounds, but light on the Latin rhythms and influences that have made up most of its discography since inception. The album also features the most number of songs off any of their albums to be sung in English, a feat that was easier said than done for the musical immigrants. The title itself is a nod to their second language as it’s the phrase they heard most often used in their English lessons.
While some fans may initially be turned off by the lack of salsa/merengue/etc. sounds from Los Amigos Invisibles’ prior work, it’ll be nearly impossible for anyone to hit the stop button once the album starts. Opener “La Que Me Gusta” will immediately get listeners whistling along to its catchy chorus of whistles while “Corazon Tatu” will be known as the cause of many a car accident thanks to a bass line that demands to be danced to.
English tracks “Sex Appeal” and “Stay” flip from fun, sexy times to serious romance. “You boost my mind with your g-string / Can’t take my mind off the little things” in the former to “Your heart is so much stronger than mine” in the latter.
Overall, “Repeat After Me” sees Los Amigos Invisibles doing what they do best: Mixing moments of seriousness and fun to danceable rhythms and grooves that should find a place in every music lover’s collection.
“Repeat After Me” is available now via Nacional Records.
